A member of the Red Sox roster since 2003, 'Big Papi" Ortiz has long been a fan favorite. To date, Ortiz holds the Red Sox record for single-season home runs with 54 in all - he achieved this in 2006. Although Ortiz is the Red Sox designated hitter, he plays first base against National League teams. Born in the Dominican Republic, Big Papi has been an All Star five times, and became a legal US citizen in 2008. He won the Hank Aaron Award in 2005, and has set the record for most home runs by a designated hitter not once, but twice in his career.
